Fishing Licenses

Fishing License at Bojorquez Paperworks

When you’re out on a boat with fishing gear in Mexican waters, it’s super important to have a valid fishing license for everyone on board, no matter their age or whether they’re actually fishing. Good news—if you’re fishing from the shore, you don’t need a license!

A fishing license lets you catch finfish only. You can’t use it to catch crustaceans or mollusks, except for squid—that’s the one exception. Remember, catching totuaba, turtles, and marine mammals is strictly off-limits because they’re protected by the Ministry.

In ocean waters, there’s a daily fishing limit per person for each type of fish. Be sure to know these limits to stay compliant. The fishing licenses are federal, so they’re valid in all Mexican waters. It’s a good idea to print your license and always have it with you. The license is personal and can last from one day up to a year, with different prices for each period.

If you’re a foreigner, keep in mind that FONMAR (Protection Fund for Marine Resources) will ask about your nationality when you apply for the permit, and there will be an extra fee if you’re not a local.
