Mexico allows you to keep your boat in the country for up to 10 years with a Temporary Import Permit (TIP). The one-time fee for a TIP is around MXN$1,000.
Every vessel needs a Temporary Import Permit, regardless of the length of stay. Without a TIP, Mexican customs might suspect your boat entered illegally, which could lead to fines or even confiscation. The good news is that within those 10 years, you can come and go as much as you like without needing to cancel or get a new TIP. Additionally, you can renew the permit after the 10 years are up!
If you arrive in La Paz without a TIP, you can easily get one at the Banjército office in the ferry terminal in Pichilingue. There’s a bus from the Malecón bus depot to Pichilingue. Just bring your passport, tourist card, boat documentation or registration, hull ID number, engine numbers, and either cash or a credit card.
You’ll also need the TIP to import parts, equipment, and materials for your boat.
If you leave Mexico and don’t plan to return before your TIP expires, you need to cancel it. Remember, there can only be one TIP per boat, and it must be in the boat owner’s name. If you sell your boat after leaving Mexico without canceling the TIP, it will be very hard, if not impossible, for the new owner to take the boat back to Mexico.
